Novel - 78,000 words
Drifting ranch hand Jameson Hale hires on at Aspen Creek with a dead family behind him and everything he owns in one bag, and gets put on nights beside Callum, the best stockman in the county: a quiet, exacting man the dogs won't go near and nobody has ever seen in daylight. Then something opens the throats of cattle, and then of men, and the county's suspicion hardens around the stockman. The crew arms itself, the sheriff keeps coming back, and the foreman starts asking questions Jameson can't answer without lying. He lies.
Aspen Creek is the first place Jameson has ever wanted to stay, and Callum is the reason. For a hundred years Callum has made sure no one gets close, and over a winter of shared coffee and fence line and forty miles of night country Jameson gets close anyway, and before the next snowfall it will get one of them killed. It ends where it lived: two men together in the dark.
